Imposing architectural remains of temples, theatres and aqueducts which still rise majestically on the sites of great ancient cities bear witness of two centuries of Graeco-Sicel, Roman and Byzantine culture, making up for one of the most remarkable archaeological treasures of mankind. In later churches, the new Latin architectural spatiality imported from central Italy and northern Europe combine with the sumptuous decoration from the Maghreb, with the narrative schemes of Byzantine mosaics, and with Apulian Romanesque sculpture. Everything talks of art in Sicily, and these pages will not try to describe everything, but only a smaller part of what you should see in this island.
